Surya Nair (IR 06) is now a columnist for Mobile Industry Review

Surya Nair (IR 06) is now a regular columnist for Mobile Industry Review.

She is introduced to the 300,000+ readership of the site as:
the first of the new MIR 3.0 columnists, Surya Nair.

Surya is in her mid-twenties and always has a particularly interesting take on the mobile industry.

If you’re not following her on Twitter, I recommend you do (username: @suryasnair).

Surya was born in South India’s Kerala region and got her first handset (a Nokia 6110) when she completed her degree in Engineering. Yup, no ‘politics’ or ‘media studies’ here. *Engineering*.

Surya is a veritable java, mainframe, SQL and mobile handset genius. In her time she’s enjoyed the Nokia 9300i (me too), the E90 (nice), the N82 (lovely camera) and currently, she’s sporting the Nokia N97. So whilst you might paint her as a mobile geek-head, hold there a moment.

For some reason, she stopped everything and took an MBA in Human Resources — before joining a large European mobile player. That means she not only avoids the ‘marriage question’ (foremost on the minds of most mothers, even worse, I gather, with Indian mothers) but she is also assured of a ready supply of new gizmos to play with.

In terms of applications she’s a regular user of the N97 integrated Facebook app, the Sports Tracker app, SP Brain Evaluation, and, “Of course, Gravity for Twitter”.

This all makes for a rather interesting columnist. Time then for part 1 of Surya’s contributions here at Mobile Industry Review.

Ruchi Gupta Varshneya (98BMD) completes Philadelphia Marathon

Ruchi Gupta Varshneya had written in 2 months ago about preparing for the full marathon and requesting encouragement, prayers and support.


Ruchi was motivated to run the marathon to contribute to the cause of Asha for Education

For someone who had never trained as a runner and a mother of twins, the training was long and hard, but Ruchi says that it was her commitment to the cause that helped her see it through. Running the half marathon in New Jersey on 5th October and the Full marathon in Philadelphia on 23rd November.

Ruchi did not forget those who had supported her endeavor and I received this lovely note from her, a day after the marathon:

Hi Kim,
Hope the note finds you well. I wanted to let you know that I completed the Philadelphia marathon this Sunday. It took me all of 5:30 hours, however I finished strong with a smile. Thanks much for your support to the cause.I also surpassed my fund raising goal. All the encouragement from friends like you was much needed and constantly replayed in my mind between mile 20 -25!.
All the effort will be worth it if it contributes to some under-privileged girls getting education and brighter future.

XLER Live on Radio (93.5 S FM)!

Ankur Saboo will be live on Radio (93.5 S FM) today from 12 noon till 2:00 PM for a program called "Prayaas".

He will be talking about the social entrepreneurial venture that has been developed by three seniors (BM 07-09); Ankur Saboo, Abhilash Soman and Anand Raghavendran.

Swavalamban is a business venture that is being taken up by a group of senior students of senior students of XLRI. It is about an ox driven generator to help electrify rural villages that are too far away from the National Grid for conventional electrification. They have been working on the concept and have developed the working product. They had given a presentation to NGOs that visited XLRI on 17^th October. Hi Kim,

I wanted to ask for some help from you. I wanted to share my recently found passion with you and also ask for your support.

I am training to run a marathon!! Completing a marathon means a victory of mind over body for me as I have no running experience and a regular busy life raising children and working full time not to mention the after effects of having twins on my body :-).
This intersects a passion of mine - helping at least some of the destitute children in India.

I never believed I could run, but the coaching program of Asha for Education revealed other wise...

.......Around 11:30 am, one of my high school buddies picks me up in his car and we go to hang out at a local tea stall called Bawwaji. The tea stall takes its name after the owner who is a large amiable fellow. He makes the best tea in the city with his own special blend of masalas. Bawwaji is located under a huge peepal tree with wide branches that provide a leafy canopy to the regulars who are permanent fixtures at this charming tea stall. I have some friends here who are so regular here that they have suggested Bawwaji should cut them in as partners. The assembly is usually parked on large chunks of stones lying under the peepal tree. The Bawwaji tea stall is a social institution in Jamshedpur and it's significance is often underestimated by those who are not in the know. This is where the budding intellectuals of Jamshedpur gather to banter about everything under the sun. I am constantly amazed at the range of opinions to be found here, and especially the conviction with which they are delivered by self proclaimed 'experts', many of whom have acquired their worldly knowledge purely by imaginative speculation. If you want to learn how to BS convincingly about anything under the sun without a clue about it, you need to come here and spend a week. .......
