Deep Condolences : Preeti Vinayak (2001)
It seems that Preeti Vinayak of the 2001 batch just passed away a couple of days ago from a prolonged illness.

Praying for safety of Xlers in Mumbai
Terrible news on the terror attacks in Mumbai. Most of it was centered around the Colaba area where a lot of XLers have their offices.
A lot of our alumni were working late in office, some live in the area and some were catching up with friends in the nearby joints, eateries and restaurants. We pray for the safety of those who were in the area.
Words are useless in situations like this. All we can do is hope and pray for now.

Sad Demise - Jasmit Singh - 76 batch
Received this mail from Arun (a batchmate of Jasmit's)
it is my sad responsibility to share an equally sad piece of news with all concerned ----- jassy aka jasmit singh is no more ------ he succumbed to a heart attack and passed away on 04 / 10 / 2008 at Delhi -------
i am sure all of us who knew him well will miss his reassuring presence at delhi + his --- " i am ready to help you right now " -------- response at all times ------ ----------------------------------------------------------------- the cremation is this evening .
i am sure most will join me in offering deepest condolences to his family ----- and bidding him a heavy heart farewell

Ambira Update & Dubai meet with Prof Sarin-May 15th
XLer Trevor D'Souza went to visit Ambira yesterday and he reported that :
Yesterday,popped in to Rashid hospital to wish Ambira on her Birthday and for a speedy recovery. The good Filipina nurses in the Trauma Ward sang birthday greetings in the morning to pep up her spirits. She was in fine fettle.
Met Prof Sharad Sarin & his wife, Prof Uday Damodaran and Radhakrishnan and had a spirited converasation. Radha, Sharad and self came up with the idea of having an XL get together on Thursday the 15th as Sharad Sarin would like to met all the Xlers and be able to make it by 9.00 pm after his class. He will then be sprinted/ whisked away to the airport to catch the 2.00 am flight to Cal as was done a year ago. Radha has graciously volunteered to arrange the venue at the India Club if there is no other place.However he requires the no. of attendees for doing the needful in informing the Club.
Johnson/ Leya could you kindly muster in the crowd as always with your excellent organizational & persuasive skills& graciousness.

Ambira’s mother wants to have a second opinion regarding her fitness to travel. The earliest appt with the Dubai Neuro Spinal Clinic we have got is 19th May so we are trying with the Bone & Joint clinic but they also seem to be full up.
If anyone have any contacts with the Dubai Bone & Joint centre and can help to get an earlier appt, please let me know.

The phone will be with her mother (or whoever is with her) ; the reception in the hospital is very poor and it is difficult to get through. SMS is preferable to phone calls which may disturb her when she is resting.

Ambira: Happy!
Email update from XL Alumnus Trevor in Dubai:
Dropped in at Rashid hospital yesterday to visit Ambira.
Ambira has recovered quite well after her surgery and is very responsive. However at times she feels a bit low. Her Mum is very courageous and has a very positive temperament.
We all chatted for over a hour laughing away and I conveyed Madhukars message that all was well and he would take care of the academic front using his astute resourcefulness. (A+s all the way) Her Mum was delighted and we chuckled as Ambira gave a broad grin. She is indeed a tough cookie inspite of the trauma and tries her best to deal with the situation.The Hospital care is excellent as well as the attending surgeons.
Madhukar the family was touched to receive the huge and lovely Birthday Card excellently worded signed by all XL faculty and fraternity- a fine gesture on XLs part.
Prof Damodaran too dropped by yesterday and wished her a speedy recovery.
Her birthday is today and we sure will have a day long bash true to XL tradition, with all the patients in the Trauma ward joining in as well as with the docs and nurses.!!!! We'll take care of the Cops and the Director - the tricks of the trade eloquently/brilliantly taught at the alma mater by a motley bunch of world renowned Profs..............

Ambira on path to recovery
Prof Uday Damodaran from Jamshedpur campus is currently in Dubai. He visited Ambira earlier today and had this to report:

Latest update on Ambira

I had visited Ambira at the Rashid Hospital, Dubai, last evening, 07/05.
Couldn’t speak to her as she seemed to be partially sort-of asleep/resting.
I didn’t then want to converse with her so as not to disturb/tire her.
Spoke to her mother.
She said probably in a month to 6 weeks period, Ambira could start to walk, and in 3 months-time, she could, hopefully, come back to normalcy.

Update on Ambira (PMIR 2009)
Couple of XL alumni based in Dubai went to visit Ambira earlier today.
Leya writes :
"Maitreya and I visited Ambira in Rashid Hospital today afternoon.
The update is :
* She can move her limbs (Thank God) although she is still taking morphine for the pain.
* The first operation is over - steel screws have been implanted in her backbone to hold it straight. There will need to be a second operation within a week or two for inserting a plate in front of her backbone. The date for this will be decided once the doctor has reviewed her progress and in consultation with the family. They will be doing the second operation
also in Dubai.
* After the second operation, depending on her progress, she can be moved to India. There will need to be intensive physiotherapy for a few months to ensure full recovery.
Ambira is worrying about her course and how she could complete / make up for lost courses. Shee is also getting bored lying flat on her back and would love listening to music, so if any of
you are going to visit her, perhaps you could lend her some of your music/copy some songs for her. She listens to anything “fast”. Reading is not possible right now as she cannot lift her head so books will not be of any use at this point of time. She can drink liquids through a straw and can eat solid food though she doesn’t have much of an appetite. Whatever appetite she has is chased away by hospital food so if anyone is visiting, some home cooked chappatis/ parathas /
idlis/ typical Punjabi food would probably be very welcome.

Prof Uday Damodaran will be visiting Dubai during May 7-11, and will be meeting Ambira (He is also the Chair - Placement, and Debu Mishra, head of Hewitt UAE is his old student from IIMB)
Ambira needs all the prayers she can get for a full and complete recovery, please take a few moments to say one for her and her family (to help them get through this trying time)

Ambira is a current student of XLRI who was doing her Summer Training with Hewitt. As a part of her internship she was seconded to Hewitt -Dubai for a week to work on a project with Dubai Ports & Customs.
As she was walking out of the office on Wednesday 1st May evening, the roof of the lobby collapsed, pinning her down under the concrete debris. She was rushed to Sheikh Rashid hospital where they discovered Multiple fractures and crushed vertebrae. Apparently Hewitt's Initial reaction was to charter a Medivac plane and send her to Delhi. Given the condition of her spine, that would have been fatal. So, the Sheikh Rashid hospital operated upon her.
An Xler from 92 batch saw her yesterday at the hospital. Bruised, with six steel bolts holding her spine, she is in agonising pain. Luckily she still has sensation in her limbs though the probability of some partial paralysis cannot yet be ruled out. Her mom, a single parent flew in from Delhi, after surprising the system by acquiring an Indian Passport issued inside 4 hours.
The doctors have recommended another surgical procedure in a few days for inserting another metal plate to support the spine. Post operative recovery would take 4-6 weeks and Ambira would not be in a position to travel during that period. Even after that it would take at the very least 6 months of physiotherapy before some kind of normalcy returns to her life.
Please pray for Ambira that she may heal completely and soon. She and her family need your prayers. If any other assistance is required, I will post an update on this blog.

Obituary : Mrs Evelyn Vanjour
Prof Vanjour (Dean in 98) died a few years ago of cancer. His wife Mrs Evelyn Vanjour just died yesterday, also from cancer.
Franklin is their only child. He was just entering high school when we were on campus (97-99). He currently works with Infosys. Franklin can be contacted at fvanjour[@]gmail[.]com

Just got a call from Franklin informing me that his mother Evelyn Vanjour, wife of Late Prof. Mike Vanjour, passed away peacefully in her sleep this morning at 0530AM, at Karunashraya.
May her soul rest in peace.
The funeral details will be announced shortly.

Earlier today there was a prayer service conducted for the repose of the soul of Evelyn at XLRI, Jamshedpur.

Mihir Bose (74batch)... RIP
Just a little while ago, I got the sad news that Mihir Bose (PM & IR 1974) passed away at about 6 pm today. Mihir had been suffering from cancer for a while.
Let us all pray for that he finds lasting peace hereafter.

Mrs Evelyn Vanjour
In late October 07 Mrs Vanjour (wife of Dean Mike Vajour) underwent cancer Surgery.
Since then she has undergone the arduous and taxing post-surgery cancer routine but apparently, without much success.
I had a call from Franklin (her Son) last night informing me that his mom is now terminal and is admitted to Karuna Ashraya.This is on the main road leading up to Whitefield and is on the left side of the road, after Corner House and before the left turn to Brookfields.
Visiting hours are up to 2100 hours,
Franklin has already taken 3 months off from work and is now assisting his mom full time at this beautiful hospital, which takes care of the terminally ill.
It is indeed sad that both his parents have been afflicted with cancer--Professor Mike having passed away some years ago.
I hope many of you will rally around an XL family in their hour of crisis through prayers and solidarity.
