Meet Prof Sharad Sarin

We've had quite a good response for this evening's cocktails and dinner program with Prof Sharad Sarin. John Idicula even pointed out that he's been at XL since 1975 so he's touched quite a few of us as probably the longest serving professor at the insti.

If you'd like to carpool to the KGA, we're allowing postings on the group so people can find others coming to the KGA from nearby localities. Please email with your name, specific location details, and your mobile number.

I'll be picking up Prof Sarin from The Atria at 6:15 PM and then heading directly to the KGA through MG Rd, Command Hospital, Airport Rd, and there's space for 2 more people. We'll be returning the same way after dinner. Please call me on 98451-41464 if you would like to join us.

See you on the evening. This will be in our usual Happy Hours format except that we will be serving dinner early and having the Q&A session post dinner.

Agenda: 7:30 PM - Bar opens
8:00 PM - Dinner starts
9:00 PM - Dinner closes
9:00 PM Onwards - Q&A Session with Prof Sarin
Venue: KGA (First Floor Hall), HAL (Old Airport) Road
Cover charges: Rs 150 (incl dinner), please pay as you enter the hall
Club Host: George Ollapally

Kuru

Ambira Update & Dubai meet with Prof Sarin-May 15th

XLer Trevor D'Souza went to visit Ambira yesterday and he reported that :

Yesterday, popped in to Rashid hospital to wish Ambira on her Birthday and for a speedy recovery. The good Filipina nurses in the Trauma Ward sang birthday greetings in the morning to pep up her spirits. She was in fine fettle.

Met Prof Sharad Sarin & his wife, Prof Uday Damodaran and Radhakrishnan and had a spirited converasation. Radha, Sharad and self came up with the idea of having an XL get together on Thursday the 15th as Sharad Sarin would like to met all the Xlers and be able to make it by 9.00 pm after his class. He will then be sprinted/ whisked away to the airport to catch the 2.00 am flight to Cal as was done a year ago. Radha has graciously volunteered to arrange the venue at the India Club if there is no other place. However he requires the no. of attendees for doing the needful in informing the Club.

Johnson/ Leya could you kindly muster in the crowd as always with your excellent organizational & persuasive skills& graciousness.
Warm regards,
Trevor

XLer Leya also asks if someone can help get an appointment for Ambira:
Ambira’s mother wants to have a second opinion regarding her fitness to travel. The earliest appt with the Dubai Neuro Spinal Clinic we have got is 19th May so we are trying with the Bone & Joint clinic but they also seem to be full up.

If anyone have any contacts with the Dubai Bone & Joint centre and can help to get an earlier appt, please let me know.

Thanks
Leya

Again, if anyone wants to sms Ambira, the number is +971503832367
The phone will be with her mother (or whoever is with her) ; the reception in the hospital is very poor and it is difficult to get through. SMS is preferable to phone calls which may disturb her when she is resting.

Prof Fenn in Bombay on 5th eve.

From: Dr. Mathai Baker Fenn

Hi,

I am in Bombay Aug 3-5 for a program I am doing. http://www.training.thetalkshop.in. If you are available in Bombay,
lets meet up on 5th Evening? If you are available please send an email to mohit kishore with your name, and mobile number?

There have been two suggestions, one is to make it a "Learning Evening" where I can share with you some of my current interests as we used to do in the class. The second is to make it more informal, meet up, maybe a drink, maybe dinner. Either way we need to organize things a bit. I am fine with either. Please send an email to Mohit along with your preference and details.

Mathai

PS. If you have read my blogs you will know I am in Armenia at the moment and am coming in only on 3rd from Armenia to Bombay.

Feel free to email me, but remember to update the list with MOHIT!

Fr. Joe Arroyo in Chennai on March 17th

Fr. Joe Arroyo (pop joe to most of us) will be in Chennai on March 17th and will leave on 19th morning to Bangalore. He arrives on 17th noon and will be staying at the Residency Towers in T'Nagar. He is visiting Chennai with his nephew and both of them will be "touring" Chennai and see the cultural highspots.

I am planning a dinner get together of those who know him; this will be on 17th evening. The venue is yet to be fixed. There will be a small subscription for dinner. I am thinking of Madras Race Club, but if others have better ideas, please let me know so that we can finalize.

Please keep your calendar free on March 17th evening and look out for details. If some of you want to accompany him on 18th, please let me know.

I will receive him at the airport on 17th and take him to the hotel. That afternoon he can do some shopping or visit local sights--local guides are welcome.
The next day (18th), a trip to Kapaleeswarar Temple, St.Thomas Mount, Santhome Church, Dakshina Chitra may be on the cards. If some of you want to drive him to these places, please let me know.
He leaves on 19th morning 10am to the airport for his Bangalore leg (19th to 22nd). So, if some of you want to drive him to the airport, that is also fine.

He will first arrive in Ahmedabad and then move to Jaipur, Delhi, Kolkatta, Chennai, Bangalore, Mumbai, Ahmedabad before flying out to Spain.

See you all then.

XL Meet on 30th March in UK???

Hello folks!
I am planning to be in UK end of March
those of you who have been, as some character in PG Wodehouse once put is "watching my career with considerable interest", would have noticed this change in field of interest:
in any case, I will be in UK, Oxford Univ to attend the Social Entrepreneurship Forum during 25-30th... the engagements are during 26th and 29th.
Was wondering if there is a chance for all of us - or as many of us as possible - to meet on the 30th - somewhere, some place??
ciao
madhukar
ps: dont tell me that I did not give you enough warning to plan you outbound travel;0))

prof gango was here!

dear xllers

best wishes for the season

Prof Gangopadhyay was here over the weekend and made sure the current xl batch in Singapore will have some sleepless nights.

For those who do not know him or have not had the pleasure of his QT quizzes - he still makes sure the that not more than a few people gets away with A+ in QT 1 and QT 2 courses.

And not to mention he is the chief architect of the entrance exams and the questions - and he swore to me that Xl tests were still the better ( compared to the CAT) integrator and filter of talent. So be proud guys and gals!!

Aside: In XL I am told that before his quizzes there is a general gango Puja held to make sure the wrath of the questions will be mild and that they will survive the jitters. Can someone from 2000+ batch confirm!!

In Singapore XL ( sadly a very small affair) I am told that he was bribed by a trip to Singapore Sentosa Island by the student rep. Hope it works!

I met him and had a great time - his conversations as interesting as ever .I took him to a lovely lunch meeting@ Shubha PMIR 84 and Nans BM 83's beautiful home.... I had last met him in 1992, when I had gone to the campus for recruitment, and after that now....so there was a lot of catch up....I did recognise him immediately - thanks to the greying goatee and typical "bong" specs - but as he mentioned statistically he has increased in girth by 50%. He has a precise way of saying from 62 kg in 1985 to nearly 90.5 kg now!!

At Shubhas place - Georgie was there and so was Narendar. Not to forget Nans....who made sure all of us were wonderfully beered up on a sunny afternoon.

It was a simple lunch meeting with great content and food.

Content ? - What content - oh I forgot to mention we had some documentaries screened ( on Gandhiji and Vinobhaji - courtesy Dr. Amarjit Singh)and Narendar). Those films are great to watch and makes you rethink India and the struggles people have had in a totally different light....

Now here is the best part - just when the local xl Singapore students thought there is only QT1 and lavished on Gango all the benefits Sentosa could offer, in the hope of a mild quiz, there is a tougher QT 2. coming And it is in the same month. imagine going through QT in 10 continuous sessions over a weekend...I think is S&M in another name!!

Prof Gango will be back Jan 27+..... and I was wondering for those who would like to re-live the gruelling times of his quizzes and for those who would love to talk about fractals (Google it and check Prof's site) and wine and cheese -

Shall we get together for our next alumni meet - Jan 28 - 8 pm to late!!

Anyone keen!!

Best Wishes
